I expect the barista to ask if I have autism.
She never does, even if I act awkwardly.
But if I never fumble at all…
She might think I rehearsed my responses.
My therapist likes to ask how I feel.
About my autism.
I got a cavity.
She wonders if it’s from autism.
I forgot the dishes.
She wonders if it’s from autism.
I get annoyed.
She says I need to calm down, it’s because I have autism.
When I was 15, my mom told me to get a job on my birthday.
When I was 18, my mom would gaze out the window, wondering if I could ever get a job.
Autism makes me unique. Autism makes me unique…
I tell myself that everyday.
