The concept for Cat-ppurcino began with Chris’s father-in-law, who was inspired by cat cafés in Japan. In Japan, these cafés feature coffee and tea bars where customers can enjoy their drinks while interacting with cats in a cozy setting. After learning about the café model, Jim, the owner, felt compelled to bring a similar idea to life in Huntington.

The journey started when Chris’s father-in-law owned a website development company that helped restaurants establish their online presence. While working in Bohemia, he discovered a colony of stray cats behind his warehouse. One day, his daughter, Chris’s wife, found a kitten from that colony and asked if they could keep it. They welcomed the first kitten with open arms, and soon after, they found two more siblings. Around this time, Chris’s brother-in-law lost his cat, and in memory of that beloved pet, he adopted another kitten from the same colony. Before they knew it, the family had taken in four cats, bringing joy to their home.

Word spread about their growing feline family. His father-in-law began rescuing more kittens and finding loving homes for them among his staff, friends, and family. As more people expressed interest in visiting the cats, it sparked the idea of converting part of his warehouse into a cat sanctuary. With a dedicated space for cages and a playroom, they took in all the cats from the colony, ensuring each one received proper medical care.

On December 1, 2019, Cat-ppurcino officially opened its doors, creating a beautiful space where people could enjoy delicious food and coffee while connecting with adorable rescue cats. This café was not only born out of love for animals but also aimed to address the issue of stray cats on Long Island. Unlike dogs, which tend to form packs, cats often remain hidden, leading to an ongoing problem in the community.

The café has become a happy place where people can gather, enjoy a meal, and witness the joy that comes from helping animals. Their father-in-law’s experience in the restaurant industry, including owning a website company for online food ordering, paired with years of working in a deli, provided the perfect foundation for running Cat-ppurcino. The story I wrote that inspired me to capture my art piece .

“Manny, my little shadow, sleek and spry,
A spunky companion, my heart’s lullaby.
Like a black purse or shoes, you’re always in tow,
Two decades of friendship, more than you’ll ever know.
An unexpected gift from the heavens above,
