At the heart of purpose driven work, I find myself seated in a serene spot, a place that feels almost ethereal. This moment of peace took shape under the guidance of my beloved sister, Cat, who now watches over us from heaven. As I wrapped up my work at CAT’s Ranch (Connect, Aspire, Transform, and Succeed)—a beautiful rescue equine foundation named in her honor, situated on the majestic grounds of Woodstock Stables in Dover Plains—I could hear her gentle whisper urging me to take a break. “Sit somewhere with peace in your heart,” she seemed to say, encouraging me to carve out time for reflection and renewal.

After exercising the rescue horses, I followed that intuition. A drive turned into a journey, with my car leading me to an unexpected yet enchanting spot nestled up a hill. When I arrived and saw the sign for Sparrow’s Nest, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging. It read simply yet profoundly—“Sparrow’s Nest.” A beautiful restaurant dedicated to families facing the challenges of cancer, it offered a sanctuary where moments of joy meet the harsh realities of life.

Upon entering, I felt an immediate sense of serenity and could vision being greeted by the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals and the soft chatter of families gathering in this haven. The restaurant’s mission struck a chord deep within me. In my prior role directing the integrated therapy program for children with cancer at a local university medical center, I spent years devoted to developing strategies that uplifted young spirits. The convergence of my past with this present felt like a divine embrace from Cat—a reminder of purpose and passion at a time when I needed it most.

Sparrow’s Nest serves more than just food; it extends compassion. Painted benches outside are dedicated to individuals who have left this world, names etched lovingly as reminders of their lives and stories. It became clear to me that Cat was guiding me here—not only to find solace, but to reignite my passion for helping others. I wept at the realization; it felt like she was saying, “You’ve been waiting to come to a place like this. Share your heart and your skills.”

As I sat on one of those benches, tears falling softly, I could hear her encouraging voice echoing in my heart. It was a call to action—to also collaborate with this wonderful charity and nurture and care for those experiencing the trials of illness, just as I did when my sister needed support. Cooking for her and her family was a big part of my life when I moved to Colorado, and now, I felt renewed purpose surging within me.

The Heartbeat of Sparrow’s Nest

Located in Union Vale, NY, Sparrow’s Nest is the manifestation of a dream held dearly by its co-founders, Kim and Michael Boller. Their journey began with personal tragedy when they lost a beloved family member to cancer. This experience illuminated the profound impact that support—both emotional and practical—has during trying times. Their vision was clear: to create a sanctuary where families could find relief and respite amidst the chaos of illness.

Their commitment led them to establish Sparrow’s Nest in 2013, a non-profit organization designed to provide meals and support for families battling cancer. Kim, a culinary enthusiast, utilized her talent and passion for cooking to create nourishing meals that offered both physical sustenance and heartfelt love to those in need. Michael brought his business acumen and unwavering support, working alongside Kim to build a community of volunteers and donors dedicated to the cause.

Over the years, Sparrow’s Nest has blossomed into more than just a restaurant; it has transformed into a community hub where stories are shared, and bonds are formed. The location is adorned with memorabilia of those who fought valiantly against cancer, their names immortalized on benches lining the garden. This space serves as a touchstone, a moment to pause and reflect on the strength of the human spirit.

Sparrow’s Nest operates on the ethos that through shared meals and connections, families can find solace and support. Families are invited to come for meals without the burden of financial strain; instead, they leave with full hearts and swelling gratitude. The local community has rallied behind Kim and Michael’s mission, with volunteers donating their time and efforts, each contributing to an ever-growing circle of compassion.

In the quiet moments of reflection at Sparrow’s Nest, I am reminded that while we may face storms in life, there is always a safe harbor—a place where grace and compassion envelop us. My sister’s spirit is palpable here, reminding me that love transcends boundaries and that our purpose can intertwine with the very essence of those we cherish.

As I walk through this sacred space, fueled by the love and devotion of the Bollers and their team, I am inspired to engage in matters of the heart—feeding not just the body but the soul. I leave this sacred spot, knowing that my journey is not just about healing myself but also about continuing Cat’s legacy of love, support, and resilience at CAT’S ranch foundation and here at Sparrow’s Nest, I aspire to show others that in their most challenging hours, they can find peace, community, and a nurturing heart awaiting them.

Blessings to all of you at Sparrow’s Nest for your hard work and devotion.
