The Peter Pan Diner (sometimes playfully associated with Tinker Bell through its Peter Pan theme) is a longtime classic diner located at 999 Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore, New York. It has served as a South Shore Long Island community staple for roughly seven decades. Our group decided to go out to dinner and went for a tour to one of Long Island’s popular Diner.
Opening and Early Years
The diner opened around 1955 on Sunrise Highway, possibly in the Bay Shore area. It quickly became known for classic diner fare at reasonable prices, friendly service, and its role as an accessible gathering spot. In 1959, Gus Lentzeres took over the business, establishing the family ownership that continues today.
Over the decades, it weathered changing food trends from mid-century favorites like Salisbury steak and Jell-O molds to more contemporary options while maintaining its no-frills, welcoming vibe. The diner remained open through major events, including Superstorm Sandy (when it had power while others did not) and the COVID-19 pandemic (offering delivery and takeout). Locals have described it as a “home away from home,” a crossroads spot for post-bar hangs, Sunday brunch, family meals, or quiet reflection.
Family Ownership
The business has stayed in the Lentzeres family for about 70 years. Gus’s sons, Peter Lentzeres and his brother Nick, own and operate it as partners. Peter has been a visible figure in decisions around its survival and revival.
The 2024 Fire and Closure
On July 1, 2024 (early hours of July 2 in some reports), a kitchen fire caused extensive damage, spreading through the building. No one was injured, but it forced the first prolonged closure in the diner’s nearly 70-year history. The fire destroyed much of the interior and took “70 years of history” with it, leaving a void in the local community.
Peter Lentzeres quickly vowed to rebuild, emphasizing the diner’s importance beyond just food: “This diner isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a place where the community, family and friends gather.”
Reopening in 2026
After a roughly 20-month closure and an insurance settlement, the diner underwent a full rebuild with renovations and an updated menu. It officially reopened in mid-March 2026. Many longtime staff returned, and the owners aimed to preserve the “same heart and soul” while giving it a fresh look. The address remains 999 Sunrise Highway, Bay Shore, NY 11706, with hours typically 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m as Fridays and Saturdays closes at 11:00PM.
