I’ve always wanted to see a Hudson River Derby at Citi Field in the Playoffs not only the regular season, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the both of them played in action on chilly Saturday Night. The match began with The Red Bulls and I was able to find my friend at the Red Bulls Supporter Section which I felt like the Red Army stick together to sing our hearts out. The Viking Army and the Red Bulls Supporters sang We Love You, Come On New York, For You, New York ‘96, Shalalalalala “Oh New York”, Come On Metro (New York), We are the Southward, Ole Ole Ola, My Greatest Desire, and the Beatles Twist and Shout.

The match began with The Red Bulls taking control of the ball and did well in the first 10 minutes. The Red Bulls sang their hearts out and use as much energy to bring in the fans together to help the Red Bulls take over Queens. At the 16th minute, Carlos Coronel the Red Bulls Goalkeeper took a massive long distance kick to Emil Forsberg while it was headed up to Dante Vanzeir. I saw a terrific play from Felipe Carballo as he got a monster laser shot goal as I wowed the excitement which it was an incredible moment to see the Redbulls scored first at Flushing Queens. I’ve also wanted to see a Red Bulls Goal to get me hyped up like most soccer fans. The players hugged around and applauded Felipe Carballo for the incredible performance as the Red Bulls take the lead 1 nil. The Red Bulls Supporters sang Twist and Shout from The Beatles as I did Liverpool Addition with the Scouse Accent. At the 24th minute, The New York Red Bulls took the corner kick and it was a great opportunity as the ball bounced over the crossbar and somehow bounced into the net as the Red Bulls took advantage of the lead 2-0. I was excitedly cheering for them and I historically laughed out that the ball went to the crossbar and still managed to get into the net. The NYCFC Players were furious that it should’ve been offside as The referee reviewed the play and the goal stands. After that, the Red Bulls sang some more until halftime. There was some fights from both New York Teams as I laughed out with City getting yellow cards which I was dissatisfied when the Red Bulls got a yellow card. I was relieved that City didn’t get a goal before halftime which it would be a shame if the game could’ve been a 2-1 lead from the Redbulls.

The Second Half began with the Red Bulls to bring in the action while NYCFC is trying to get their first goal but nothing happen at the moment. The New York Red Bulls had 3 fouls in the penalty box which the referee didn’t want to say it’s a penalty foul which the fans and I were furious that it was not called a foul. If I would’ve been a soccer referee, I would definitely called it a foul no matter which team if it’s home or away, it’s to decide for the job of what their doing with the decision. The 3rd time I was really hoping to get the actual result but the referee did a review play for penalty foul and it was disallowed for the Red Bulls which it robbed our chance to get the 3rd Goal. Aside from that, The Red Bulls fans resumed singing in the stands and they also sang Why Aren’t You Singing to the City Fans. When stoppage time approached, I was so eager to declare the final whistle. The whole Red Bull’s Fans were excited that City missed 3 opportunities to get their goal and Carlos Coronel did a phenomenal performance defending the ball to cost the Red Bulls perfect game. When the final whistle came out, everyone cheered excitedly as fans excitedly got a chance to see the Red Bulls win at Citi Field for the first time in Team History and it was their first MLS Cup Playoffs game against NYCFC. The New York Red Bulls won 2-0 which they could’ve won 3 or more if the referee hadn’t blown the opportunity of getting the penalty shot but as long as the Red Bulls takes the win, that’s all it matters. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Hudson River Derby Playoffs and maybe they could officially meet again either next time in Queens or by the time when Etihad Park in Willets Point (Queens, New York) opens to Queens in 2027.
